11/13 Long-term Visioning/Goals Workshop

Why is OP important to us? What is the value of the movement to us?

  • Staying. Holding a physical space
    • Being publicly visible
  • Full of many potential connections
  • Learning, getting educated, people teaching eachother
  • Access starting point for a movement bigger than just occupy
    • Mobilizer. Empowering for everyone 
  • Networking with like-minded people
  • Networking with unlike-minded people
  • Gives hope for alternatives
  • Holds politicians corporations and capitalism accountable
  • Exposure to people of diverse backgrounds
    • Living with people of diverse backgrounds, not just politically interacting, culturally interacting
  • Living experiment of creating both cultural and political alternatives
  • Space for public discourse
    • Expanding knowledge and tolerance
  • Creating awareness and fighting corporate power
  • We are shaping it. It is nothing but what we put into it
    • Awesome and scary!
  • Opened up the boundaries of what is possible to do or think about
    • The bounds of thinkable thought
  • Personally transformative for the people involved
    • Meeting others AND meeting yourself!
  • Productive. Direct action
  • Its human. Not too many rules. Not too constructed
    • Trust in individuals
  • It has everybody looking
  • Transforming media: what it looks at and how it reports
    • Media has to actually think and dig out truth
  • Creates the possibility for the liberation of all people
  • Creates a culture of questioning who and what is free

 

How to Move Forward, Building on our strengths

  • Live it in our personal lives
  • Outreach: local businesses, communities, individuals
    • Have specific actions to draw in solidarity
    • Showers from gyms, meeting space from venues
  • Show others that the movement speaks to their issues, is for them
    • Actions that prove that
  • School outreach
    • Hold classes, occupy schools
  • Replicate and create occupations outside of the park
  • Direct action for things facing other communities
    • Protect people’s homes that are facing foreclosure
  • Develop our accessibility, improve/expand points of entry into Occupy Providence
    • Ex: children’s night, Occupy the Night, childrens/families events
  • Improve communication with folks outside of burnside
  • Improve publicity of events in the park
  • Keep on fighting for a safe space
  • Nurture positive interpersonal relationships within and without park
  • Maintain occupation of Burnside while developing other sites of occupations/actions
  • Present park as a resource for everyone
    • Ex. Having outreach “is your house getting foreclosed? Come to burnside and talk about it”
  • Schedule signs all over
  • Fight for all the 99%
  • Never be too sure you are right
    • Have tolerance for people’s opinions, the only thing we definitely know we’re right about is the 99%
  • Don’t get too static in how we occupy, evolve
  • Put our energy into our politics as well as our physical space
  • Increase cultural value of occupation
  • Increase positivity and positive/affirmative direct actions
    • Not just against the gov’t, for the people
    • Ex. Coffee in the morning for teacher at schools, RIPTA workers to show our appreciation
  • Target politicians, camp out at their houses
  • Request celebrity presence! Invite all touring musicians coming to providence to come to Burnside
  • Keep it fresh
  • Occupy local businesses, organize trips/nights at bars, restaurants, etc. Ask for their public support
  • Publicize who supports/has supported us
  • More fun actions: Frisbee game with messaged Frisbee at the state house
  • Messages on paper cranes
  • Movie night
  • Write to politicians
  • Sharing personal comebacks and messaging for “what are you protesting??”
  • Hold state accountable for homeless issues
    • Demand better resources
  • More art
  • Education working group
  • Increase voting with your feet
  • Transform mindset of people not yet involved from “I can’t do that” to “I want to do that”

Future conversations:

  • Better address homelessness
  • Workshop on articulating opinions
  • Winter conversation
    • Igloos?
  • Education/workshops on the interconnectedness of various forms of oppression
